Imagine the very special feeling of wearing a unique piece of jewellery, created just for you – your wedding ring, an anniversary brooch, a pendant given – or received – as a gift. It’s something everyone dreams about – but how do you make your dream come true? People can feel a bit wary about asking a goldsmith to make them an individual piece, so I thought I would compile some of the Frequently Asked Questions to help people out.
Can you make this?
This is the best question to begin with! The answer is probably ‘yes’, and then we can ask the other questions below and get ourselves started. However, there are one or two warnings. Often, I am approached by people to make something that they have seen online. I will not copy other jewellers’ work but I am happy to provide my own interpretation of a piece. If the work is by an independent maker, it is only fair that you ask them first if they can make your piece for you. If they say no, then by all means get in touch and I can see what I can do. And while it is understandable to take inspiration from an existing piece, it’s much more exiting to work with me to bring your own imagined piece to life!
How much will it cost?
When people ask this, I normally turn it around and ask what their budget is and I then try to design something that will fit the budget. So, don’t be afraid to ask!
When we work together on a commission, cost is always important. I will provide you with a quote before I start making an agreed design and do my best to stick to that. If it looks as though the final price will change – because material costs have increased, the work has proven more difficult than estimated, and so on – I will always keep you in the loop so that there are no nasty surprises.
How long will it take?
Most commissions take about four weeks to complete. Some are quite quick and easy, some are more complex and the design stages alone take weeks to figure out. If you need something done quickly, please say so at the beginning of the process so I can work out if I can do it or not!
What do I get in terms of design choice?
I do my best to allow you, the client, to influence the design where possible. If you have an existing plan in your head, that is great – I can work with you to turn your idea into a finished piece. If you have no clue, that is also great! I will produce three rough designs and you can see which elements you like.
From those three designs, I will work up a more finished design which you can say yea or nay to. For bigger commissions, I will create a hand rendered scale drawing of the piece so you can see how it will look in the flesh.
